This Day in Politics: March 27, 1854 – Crimean War

On March 27, 1854, The UK declares war on the Russia Empire. The British Empire was joined by the kingdom of Sardinia, the Duchy of Nassau, the French Empire, and the Ottoman Empire among others to taken on the Russians.

As the Ottoman Empire began to decline the major powers of Britain and Russia wanted influence over these territories. Most of the battles of this war took place in the Crimean Peninsula but there were also battles in the Baltic Sea, Pacific Ocean, White Sea and in Western Turkey.

Peace negotiations began in 1856 to end the conflict.
