These aren’t made. If you want silly April Fools news head to be one of the other sites. These are all political events that happend on the 1st of April though:

  • In 1318 Berwick-upon-Tweed is captured by the Scotland from England.
  • In 1789 the United States House of Representatives elects Frederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania as its first House Speaker.
  • In 1865 during the American Civil War: Battle of Five Forks, Confederate General Robert E. Lee begins his final attack.
  • In 1867 Singapore officially becomes a British crown colony.
  • In 1924 Hitler is sentenced to five years in jail for his participation in the “Beer Hall Putsch”.  During that time he writes Mein Kampf.In 1933 the recently elected Nazis under Julius Streicher organize a one-day boycott of all Jewish-owned businesses in Germany.
  • In 1937 Aden becomes a British crown colony. It joins many other countries.
  • In 1939 Generalísimo Franco of the Spanish State announces the end of the Spanish Civil War.
  • In 1945 during Operation Iceberg, the United States troops land on Okinawa in the last campaign of the war.
  • In 1946 the Malayan Union is formed.
  • In 1948, the Berlin Airlift takes place – Military forces, under direction of the Soviet-controlled government in East Germany, set-up a land blockade of West Berlin.
  • Also that April 1st… the Faroe Islands receive autonomy from Denmark.
  • In 1949 the following took place on that day:
    • Chinese Civil War: The Communist Party of China holds unsuccessful peace talks with the Kuomintang in Beijing, after three years of fighting.
    • The Canadian government repeals Japanese Canadian internment after seven years.
    • The twenty-six counties of the Irish Free State become the Republic of Ireland.
  • In 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorizes the creation of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado.
  • In 1992 the Bosnian war starts on this day.
  • In 1999 Nunavut is established as a Canadian territory.
  • In 2001 Slobodan Milošević surrenders to police special forces. He is then tried on war crimes charges.
  • In 2001 same-sex marriage becomes legal in the Netherlands. They are the first country to do this.
  • In 2002 the Netherlands legalizes euthanasia. Again, they are the first nation to do this.
  • In 2009 Croatia and Albania join North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
