Newcastle United have rejected an improved £23 million bid from Tottenham for Andy Carroll, while Liverpool are bracing themselves for a Torres bid from Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspur’s latest attempt to prize England International Andy Carroll away from St James Park has been rejected by the Magpies.

Carroll has scored 11 Premier League goals this season, and Spurs boss Harry Redknapp had been reportedly tracking the striker after his impressive season so far.

Newcastle United issued a statement following the renewed interest in Carroll; “The club would like to make it clear for the very last time that Carroll is simply not for sale.”

In the aftermath of Fernando Torres handing in a transfer request, Liverpool are now bracing themselves for an improved offer from Premiership Champions Chelsea for the striker.

Liverpool rejected the Spanish striker’s request following Chelsea’s offer, and expect Torres to see out his contract.

“Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool ” a club spokesperson stated.

“Fernando is under long-term contract and the club expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”

Liverpool yesterday completed the signing of Ajax striker Luis Suarez, and Liverpool fans now face an anxious wait to see if he will now line up alongside Torres for the remainder of the season.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are still interested in highly rated Southampton winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. There have been no reports of a bid for the youngster yet, with Manchester United and Liverpool also showing interest.

Shay Given has confirmed that he is willing to go out on loan to a Championship club in order to regain match fitness. The Irish number one has dropped down the pecking order at Manchester City behind England International Joe Hart.

Mexican striker Carlos Vela has completed his move to West Brom from Arsenal. The highly rated 21 year old joins the Baggies on loan until the end of the season.
