Yaya Toure has made the astonishing claim that Manchester City can be better than Barcelona in the next few years, although he is one of the few people qualified to make such a statement.
Having left Barcelona to move to Manchester, Toure has played for both teams, and believes that continued investment in the squad can make City the best team in the world.
“You cannot compare Barcelona with City right now because Barca are at the top and have top-quality players,” he said, speaking to The Sun.
“They have Leo Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Dani Alves, who are fantastic. But we are still signing new players.
“In a couple of years we could be better than Barcelona. What we need to do is continue to work hard and improve with every game.
“I keep saying to my brother Kolo and my family that City have great players but we need to continue to work hard to become great.”
City could still achieve their own treble this season, sitting eight points behind leaders United, but with easier games left to play, have reached the last 16 of the FA Cup, and are in the last 32 of the Europa League.
Toure, 27, has insisted that this seasons only target is to qualify for the Champions League, a draw which will enable the club to attract more top players.
Toure continued,”Our target is still to be in the Champions League next year – that is very important for this club.
“But it will be tough to stay in there because Liverpool are coming and I’m sure Chelsea will be back.”
