Tottenham Hotspur have launched a last minute bid to bring former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan to White Hart Lane, after failing to land his £40 million strike partner Aguero.
Forlan, who was voted the best player at this summer’s world cup, is thought to want to leave the Spanish capital, despite struggling to make an impact last time he played in England.
Forlans strike partner, Sergio Aguero, reaffirmed his loyalty to Athletico by turning down a chance to join Spurs and signed a new contract.
Spurs lost 4-0 to Fulham in the cup at the weekend and Redknapp admitted after the game that his players were running on empty. The result should have given him even more ammunition when asking Daniel Levy for more players to help with his Champions League and Premier League bid for success this season.
Spurs are well set in the Champions League, having reached the last 16 for the first time in their history, and sit 5th in the league, just below the Champions League places.
Forlan has already been the subject of one bid this week, as Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid had a £13million bid turned down, and having turned to Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor instead are unlikely to still be interested.
Redknapp went to Madrid earlier this week to watch Forlan, who has 8 league goals this season, and Diarra of Madrid and will hope he can secure a deal for the 31 year old before the window closes at 11pm tonight.
