Arsenals Dutchman Robin Van Persie will captain his team in Sundays Carling Cup Final against Birmingham at Wembley said boss Arsene Wenger today.
Van Persie will return from injury to captain his team after Arsenal lost Cesc Fabregas to injury against Stoke on Tuesday.
Wenger announced his captain, and also said that Arsenal will have to face Barcelona in two weeks time without Theo Walcott, as he was unlikely to recover in time to face the Catalan giants.
When asked about Cesc Fabregas playing on Sunday Wenger said, “No, because he is injured and you cannot play football when you are injured.
“He is sad and disappointed, of course. But it could have been worse. The injury is a very small one, and we have so many targets in front of us that it is important he is not out for longer.”
Wenger added: “What I believe is important now is that the team and the squad focuses on the game we want to play on Sunday.
“Ideally we want everybody fit, but before the season starts you know that you can have some players injured. We can deal with that.”
Wenger was then asked who would lead the team out for the Wembley final against Birmingham and said, “The vice-captain, who is Robin van Persie.”
