Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has revealed he believes Shaun Wright Phillips could have a vital role to play in the teams Premier League run in, after impressing his boss off the bench.
With fellow England International Adam Johnson out for three months with an ankle injury, Wright Philips has been given a chance to impress again.
Despite not featuring for City in the first half of the season, Mancini bought the diminutive winger on during the second half of the derby, and SWP played well in the 2-1 defeat.
The Italian was pleasantly surprised by the cameo, and believes Wright Phillips may yet have the skill and character to fill Johnsons boots.
“When Shaun played in the second half he played very well and was very important to us,” explained Mancini.
“I said 20 days ago when we lost Adam Johnson that we could have a problem, because he could have changed this game.
“But we don’t have him in this moment and it is maybe important that Shaun can play now.”
