Ever confident, always with something to say, former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho watched his side draw 1-1 with Lyon and predicted that they would win through to the quarter finals of the Champions League at home.
Madrid have not made it to the quarter finals in six years, but Mourinho is somewhat a Champions League specialist, having won it before with poop Porto and Inter Milan sides, and will be confident he can win it again this year with Madrid.
Karim Benzema came off the bench to give Madrid the lead with his first touch before Bafetimbi Gomis levelled the game near the end.
Mourinho said: “I feel like I watched a real Champions League match: hard and well contested with very few clear chances due to the defensive rigour on both sides.
“In the second half we managed to find spaces and, to begin with, we were closer to a second goal than Lyon were to an equaliser.
“But it sets things up well for the second leg, where we will hope to qualify in front of our supporters.”
Lyon coach Claude Puel was disappointed that his side had conceded an away goal.
He said: “At home, in the first leg, we would have preferred them not to score. It’s a bit of a shame, especially because we played a great first half.”
