Martinez – Kirkland won’t be going to Cardiff

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has insisted goalkeeper Chris Kirkland will not be joining Championship Cardiff on loan.

The 29 year-old has lost his place in the Wigan first team and was said to be close to joining the Welsh outfit.

The deal has now been called off because Kirkland is apparently unwell.

Dave Jones has been keen to add another goalkeeper after seeing number one Tom Heaton suffer a groin injury, and replacement, David Marshall requires surgery on his elbow.

Despite Kirkland not being number one at the DW Stadium, Martinez said, “The deal won’t be going ahead. Kirkland is staying at Wigan.”

Cardiff will have to hope Heaton recovers in time to face Ipswich at the weekend as their third choice goalkeeper Jordan Santiago is also out with a broken finger.
