Raul Meireles grabbed all three points for Liverpool, as Torres was ineffective on his Chelsea debut.
Chelsea failed to capitalise on Manchester United and Arsenal’s slip ups yesterday, as Fernando Torres’s debut is spoiled by Raul Meireles.
The free scoring midfielder scored in the 69th minute, after the Chelsea defence failed to clear the ball out of the box.
The Liverpool fans day got even better when Kalou replaced Torres with twenty minutes to go.
Chelsea pressed for an equaliser but were far from impressive in their build up play, and in the final third.
Liverpool battled hard to hang on for three points, and manager Kenny Dalglish left new striker Suarez on the bench.
Liverpool looked comfortable enough that Dalglish chose not to use Suarez at all, opting for more defensive substitutes as Liverpool held out for the three points.
The result will be a massive confidence booster for Liverpool, but question marks will again be raised over Chelsea’s title credentials.
