Belgian star Kim Clijsters has won her first Australian Open today with a three-set win over China’s Li Na in the Rod Laver Arena here in Melbourne Park.

The women’s champion lost the first set 6-3, despite having three break points in the first game on Li’s serve, and winning that game. Li broke striaght back and Clijsters seemed to be struggling to find her rhythm.

The second set saw both players breaking each others serve, as no one could get a grip on the game, and the first 5 games went against serve, before Clijsters finally held her nerve and pulled away 4-2. Clijsters went on to win the second set 6-3 and the game was level.

Clijsters then broke twice again in the third set, and despite being broken back for the 13th service break of the match held on to serve out the match and deny China their first ever Grand Slam champion.

The win is Clijsters fourth Grand Slam title, having already won three US Open titles and she will head to the French Open and Wimbledon full of confidence.
