Former Manchester United and England right back Gary Neville has retired from football with immediate effect.

The 35 year old has suffered with injuries for the last two seasons and has only played a couple of times in that period.

Neville spoke through tears to the United website, saying, “I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I’ve ever had,”

“Obviously I am disappointed that my playing days are at an end, however it comes to us all, and it’s knowing when that time is and for me that time is now.

“I have played in the most incredible football teams, playing with some of the best players in the world as well as against them and I have been lucky to have been part of the team’s achievements and the club’s great success.

“There are so many people I want to thank and, of course, top of that list is Sir Alex. He has given me so many opportunities and countless support over the last 20 years – he is truly one of the greatest managers – and I have to thank him for that.”

Nevilles last two appearances for Manchester United have seen him play well off the pace, and both games saw him fortunate not to be sent off.

That should  not take away from what has been an extroadinary career, which has seen Neville amass

The full-back had not played since the New Year’s Day victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns, when he was fortunate not to be dismissed for a professional foul on Graham Dorrans.85 England caps, and play 602 times for his one and only club, Manchester United.

Neville was part of the famous Youth FA Cup winning side from 1992, playing with United legends, Giggs, Scholes and Beckham, plus Butt, Savage and Gillespie who all made it at the top level.

Neville comes from a sporting family as his sister plays netball for England, as well as brother Phil, who is now Everton captain.

Gary Neville will be remembered for his hatred of Liverpool and his leadership on and off the field. Neville was United captain for many years and David Beckhams best man at his wedding.

Now Nevilles career is over, the player has been widely tipped to suceed Andy Gray as SkySports cheif football pundit.
