In the early kick-off in the FA Cup, Everton came from a goal behind to claim a draw in extra-time against Chelsea, before beating the holders on penalties.
The fourth round replay proved to be as close as the first encounter with both teams unable to get one over on their opponents.
Chelsea looked to be on their way when Frank Lampard put the London side 1-0 up in the 104th minute, until a stunning Leighton Baines free kick right at the end of extra time forced the game into penalties.
The Everton hero then saw his penalty saved in the shootout, while Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole also missed their penalties, before Phil Neville fired home from the spot to send Everton into the fifth round.
Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to not include Fernando Torres in his squad for the game will now be questioned, as Chelsea’s lacklustre campaign continues.
The win will be a welcomed boost for David Moyes and his Everton side, who have been inconsistent this season and have struggled for form.
Chelsea will point to a number of refereeing decisions from Phil Dowd in the aftermath of the defeat, but once again they have come undone this season.
