Darren Bent made the perfect start to his Aston Villa career after scoring on his debut against Manchester City. Villa won 1-0 and claimed a vital three points for struggling manager Gerard Houllier

The £24 million man moved this week from Sunderland in controversial circumstances, with his former club claiming he was tapped up. Bent handed in a transfer request and was allowed to leave for the bumper sum.

The goal came after 18 minutes when Ashley Young came forward, took a low shot which Joe Hart saved, but only into the path of Darren Bent, who finished it off from close range.

City, who had their new look strike force of Tevez, Dzeko and Silva on show for the first time, but nearly £90 million worth of talent couldn’t break down the Villa door as the Birmingham club held on at Villa Park for a valuable three points.

With West Ham only drawing today, Villas win takes them up to 16th, above close rivals Birmingham who got beaten 5-0 today by City’s neighbours, Manchester United.

City drop to third after both Arsenal and United won today.
