Chelsea beat the deadline to sing Brazilian defender David Luiz in a five and a half year deal. The former Benfica player will move to Stamford Bridge, with Nemanja Matic, currently on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, going the other way in the summer.
23 year old Luiz made a last minute dash to Chelsea last night to complete his medical after the deal had initially been called off.
The player, who made his international debut in August, was excited about the move last night. “I am delighted to be joining a big English club,” said Luiz.
“I know very well the quality that Chelsea has.
“It is a major challenge for me but I am determined and confident in my ability to adapt to this excellent league, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates.”
Benfica had told the stock exchange last week that the deal had broken down and that Luiz wouldn’t be moving clubs, but Chelsea resurrected the deal last night and Luiz made his move.
Blues chief executive Ron Gourlay said, “David Luiz is one of the great defensive prospects in world football, and already a Brazilian international, I am sure he will prove a valuable addition to the Chelsea squad.”
With Torres and Luiz in their team, Chelsea could start to challenge for top spot again.
