Barcelona suffered a surprise first defeat of the season, following their 3-1 defeat by Real Betis in the Copa Del Ray second leg.
Thankfully for Guardiola’s men they defeated Betis 5-0 in the first leg, and go through to the next round 6-3 winners on aggregate.
The defeat will give Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid hope after Betis proved Barcelona are actually beatable, although it may be argued that the Spanish League Leaders never got out of second gear.
Guardiola’s side fell behind after just two minutes when Jorge Molina struck from a close range free kick to give the home side a glimmer of hope.
The Spanish second division leaders then made in 2-0 when the impressive Molina again beat stand in Barcelona keeper Jose Pinto.
The newly crowned world player of the year put the tie back in Barcelona’s favour, when he skipped past the Betis defence and calmly slotted into the back of the net.
But Real were not finished, and made it 3-1 on the stroke of half time, when Asturo Arzu beat Pinto to give Betis a glimmer of hope.
Betis came out firing after the brake, and did their best to break down Barcelona in search of the three goals they needed.
Barcelona held onto the ball and the victory, with Messi proving that he too is not invincible after he lifted his 54th minute penalty over the bar.
