Marks and Spencer managed an almost 3% rise in sales for the last 3 months, despite the adverse weather conditions.
The retailer is among a selected group of stores that have seen sales rise over the Christmas period, while online sales through M&S direct were up 25%. This brings their totals sales up to 4% in the run up to Christmas. International sales were up even more, with a 4.5% rise.
It had been said that the severe weather in December would put shoppers off and most shops were expected to see a loss for this period. However M&S reports that it had an increased share in both the food and clothing department.
However it was said that while this is good news for now, there are tougher times ahead. The increase in VAT is going to put pressure on the disposable income of consumers, as will the cuts in public spending.
