After 25 years together, movie star turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver announced their separation on Monday.

The couple met at a charity tennis tournament in 1977 and married in 1986. Over the past 25 years, they went on to raise a family of four children as famous body builder Schwarzenegger morphed into a movie mega star and then took his hand to politics in 2003 and became the governor of California for two terms.

Shriver is no stranger to politics. Shriver is the daughter of John F. Kennedy ‘s sister and her father, the famed Sargent Shriver was the Democratic candidate for vice president in 1972 and also created the Peace Corps, America’s equivalent to the VSO.

Although they do share a passion for politics, their opposing views have been evident for years, culminating in a very public display of disagreement as Shriver backed then presidential candidate Obama while Schwarzenegger supported Republican John McCain.

In addition to their different political views, the marriage has been through its share of troubles; notably the infamous reports of Schwarzenegger’s alleged groping of women during his 2003 campaign.

Since stepping down as governor in January, the couple has been living separate lives with Shriver most recently moving out of their mansion in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The couple commented on the split: “This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us. After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship.”

A spokesperson for the couple did not comment on the possibility of divorce.
