Gwent Police have revealed the postmortem of the heavily pregnant teenager found dead after a flat fire in Newport indicates that she was stabbed to death. The police investigating the death are treating the incident as murder.

19-year-old Nikitta Grender was eight months pregnant with a baby girl.

Detective Superintendent Geoff Ronayne of Gwent Police said: “This is an horrific crime where two innocent lives have been lost. Nikitta was two weeks away from giving birth to a baby girl. This is particularly callous and something we very rarely see.”

“When Nikitta’s family should have been looking forward to the birth of her baby they are now absolutely grief stricken,” he added.

The fire happened on Saturday morning in Newport, and officers from Gwent Police and South Wales Fire Service were called to the flat in Broadmead Park in Liswerry at 0750 hours.

Firefighters entered the heavily smoke-filled building and found the body of Nikitta Grender inside the bedroom of the first floor flat. Her pet dog also died in the fire.

Officers said that the weapon used on Nikitta, believed to be a knife, has not yet been found. The scene is still cordoned off and is being examined by forensics.

It is known that Nikitta was out with friends on Friday evening and visited McDonald’s in the Spytty area during the evening. Gwent police are still trying to establish the exact time she arrived back at her address.

Officers are urging anyone who was in the vicinity, or anybody was with her or who saw her at any point from 7pm on Friday 4th February onwards to get in touch.
