Ricky Gervais has defended the jokes he made at the Golden Globes, by saying “If they didn’t want me, they shouldn’t have hired me…. I don’t think I did anything wrong.”
Speaking on Piers Morgan’s new American chat show, Gervais insists that he only accepted the job hosting the awards on the basis that he could say whatever he wanted.
The British comedy star was given a mixed reception at the awards after openly mocking Hollywood A-listers such as Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.
Robert Downey Jr, who has a history of drug problems, was welcomed to the stage by Gervais saying “Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail.”
Gervais said “I’m not going to apologise for being true to myself. My strategy is to make me laugh. If there’s anyone in the world like me, that’s a bonus.”
Piers Morgan said that criticising Gervais after asking him to do the awards was “A bit like inviting a hammerhead shark to dinner and then when he eats all the guests you start complaining.”
There was speculation about whether or not Gervais been asked to calm down his performance, as at one point during the evening he was off stage for nearly an hour.
