Welsh actress Margaret John has died in Hospital after a short illness. She is best known for playing Doris in the popular comedy series Gavin and Stacey
John received a Bafta Cymru Lifetime Achievement award in 2009
Co Star Rob Brydon Tweeted “”Just heard the terribly sad news that Margaret John has passed away. What a wonderful person she was, everyone on G&S adored her.”
James Cordon also wrote “A great actress and an incredible lady. She will be missed.”
John appeared in ‘Calendar Girls’ at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff last summer, and the venue hailed her as a “national treasure”.
Though she was best known for her character on Gavin and Stacey, John has enjoyed a long career with appearances on Coronation Street, Doctor Who and Emmerdale. Her last appearance on screen was in the new S4C drama ‘Alys’
John also has a part in the 2007 film ‘Run Fat Boy Run’ starring Simon Pegg and directed by David Schwimmer.
More recent TV appearances include, the welsh comedy ‘High Hopes’ and the second series of the BBC Three drama ‘Being Human’.
She was very passionate about charity work, helping to £20m to reduce social loneliness among the elderly people in Wales. As well as appearing on Children in Need and Comic Relief.
Her agent, Gemma McAvoy, said: “Margaret worked tirelessly for charity; always happy to give her time and boundless energy to help others.
“She completed ‘the mile’ for Sport Relief; performed with Only Men Aloud and stuffed money into John Barrowman’s trousers for Children in Need and played drums for the Gavin and Stacey Comic Relief Barry Islands in the Stream sketch”
