Billy Ray Cyrus regrets becoming a friend to his children, insisting he “should have been a better parent” to Miley and her siblings.
Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus looks back on his parenting years with regret, insisting he should have been more of a parent and less of a friend to his kids.
Billy Ray, himself a country star, has three children, Miley, Braison and Noah, as well as looking after estranged wife Tish’s kids, Brandi and Trace.
Billy Ray is often seen at Miley Cyrus’s side at red carpet events and has a very relaxed relationship with his daughter.
Speaking to GQ magazine, the star says he wishes he had been more firm with the children growing up, especially as Miley has gone from one scandal to another in recent months.
Billy Ray said, “How many interviews did I give and say, ‘You know what’s important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids’? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, ‘You don’t need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.’ Well, I’m the first guy to say to them right now: You were right. I should have been a better parent.”
