Belgian endurance runner Stefaan Engles entered the record books yesterday after completing his 365th marathon in a year.

Averaging around four hours, the man dubbed, ‘Marathon Man’ completed his final race which has seen him run marathons across seven countries.

Having begun his challenge in Belgium last year, the record breaker has run the gruelling 26mile challenge every single day, culminating in the Barcelona marathon this weekend.

Having run just under 10,000 miles Engles was philosophical about his unique achievement.

“I don’t regard my marathon year as torture. It is more like a regular job,” the 49-year-old said.

With a best time of two hours and 56 minutes, Engles overcame doctor’s advice from when he suffered asthma as a child to avoid sport and beat the previous record set by Japanese man Akinori Kusuda of Japan who ran 52 races in a row in 2009.
