The new version of the popular iPhone and iPod touch game Angry Birds will be a tie in with a Hollywood animated film, it has been revealed.
The updated version of the game, in which players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, is due for release in March, and will feature characters from the movie RIO, made by the same people as Ice Age.
The new game will have 45 levels, and will “introduce the millions of fans of Angry Birds to the exciting world of RIO” according to a Fox spokesman.
In it the birds travel to Brazil in order to attempt to rescue two characters; Blu and Jewel, a pair of tropical birds who are the main stars of the film.
Angry Birds RIO is thought to “pair the physics-based gameplay of the original with unique twists based on the highly anticipated film” according to Finnish developers Rovio.
During 2010, the game was downloaded over 50 million times on a variety of smartphones, and is set for release on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
The popular game is further rumoured to become a TV show, which would see the birds appearing on even more screens in 2011.
The Angry Birds RIO movie will be released on 15 April,.
