Eastenders recent cot death storyline has proved controversial, causing over 3,500 complaints from viewers.

Samantha Womack who plays Ronnie Branning is rumoured to be leaving the soap after one dramatic plot line too far.

The actress, who plays a new mother in the popular BBC1 Soap, lost her new born baby to cot death and then swapped him for Kat Moon’s (Jessie Wallace) new-born baby.

Womack’s agent is downplaying reports that her departure is due to the recent storyline and emphasises that her contract comes to a natural end in the not-too-distant future.

However, the 38-year-old actress is said to have stopped filming as she was too upset at the distressing storyline and ‘made it clear’ to her superiors that she thought the disturbing plot was one step too far.

Although the plot appears to fit in with the harrowing events that continue to happen within the small Albert Square, Samantha allegedly handed her letter of resignation in November after she read the script for the New Years’s Eve episode.

Samantha called filming the scenes as the “most horrific four weeks” of her life and said she “couldn’t stop crying.

“What Ronnie has been through is such a crushingly awful thing to even pretend might happen to you. I actually felt ill having to portray it. We used an expensive silicone doll, and it was so lifelike it upset a lot of people on set. We had to stop and take a break because it was too much.”

The star is rumoured to be leaving the show in May.

I think that the story line indeed would of hurt so many people watching it, i think Ronnie should leave because after this story line how could the character ( ronnie ) stay in walford, maybe she could take her career some where else instead. When i watched it , it did touch a nerve and i really wanted to cry… it’s definatly going to be one to remember for Eastenders.

My thoughts on the storyline in my opinion is so unrealistic!
Eastenders try and do their best to make things exiting and interesting. This storyline isnt either, its actually painful to watch.im not enjoying seeing ronnie kat nor alfie and family in so much pain.
Its not life like at all things just DO NOT happen in real life like this……off the top of my head ronnie has been raped by her dad left by her mum mentally tortured by her dad for years had her baby daughter stolen from her and reunited only to lose her on “the day” she realises shes her long lost baby, then her sister has her true loves baby….she then rejoins with him and marrys him…and then the baby dies and if thats not enough she then steals another ladies baby who just so happens to live in the same street and born on the same day and the same sex……..oh come on eastenders what a load of twaddle.i feel for the actress shes constantly crying or scheming something….give the woman a break!

It was a very disrespectful storyline and shows that they do not really care about the british public.

my friend has just lost her 14 month old baby at the begining of December, i cant even imagine what she is going through and im afraid its all a bit too close to home. parents that loose their children have no closure, their baby dies and thats it, theres no comfort in what it was and for them to think there was nothing i could do, it is all what ifs. Eastenders is great but they have failed their viewers by this storyline! …

It’s Eastenders, what do you expect ? Scraping the barrel as usual, just for the sake of viewing figures – pathetic

It’s an awful storyline but I’m wondering how many of us are actually voting with our remotes by turning it off / watching other channels? It might be like a bad smell: disgusting to sniff at but curiosity can get the better of you? I’d like to know how this storyline is affecting Eastenders’ viewing figures.

I agree, the storyline is so unrealistic, i have considered not watching anymore. Where on earth would something happen like that in real life to those extents? Really bad storyline

Yes I think that it was a chilling and upsetting tale, and sensitive for thousands of viewers but really what do you expect? You all like it when someone is having a good old affair or when a family relative dies… you don’t complain then do you? Now, this actress who plays the part perfectly well has to leave her job which is viewed by ten million people (pretty good job I would say) … BECAUSE the lot of you complained.

I agree that the storyline is sick – for the first time in 20 years of watching Eastenders I too feel it’s a storyline too far; the subject of cot-death is distressing enough for those who’ve experienced it, but to add an unrealistic and improbable scenario of a baby-swap diminishes the soap’s role as an awareness-raising agent for sensitive subjects……..However, both Samantha Womack and Jessica Wallace have played their roles superbly and have nothing to reproach themselves for in their portrayal of grieving mothers – I will be sorry to see Samantha leave.

i think the storyline has gone out of control and has gone too far after i watched this eastenders episode i did not watch another after i might just watch it when all this baby thing wares off and when kat knows ronnie (samantha womack should go to walford albert square prison) eastenders,i click you goodbye
