Eastenders recent cot death storyline has proved controversial, causing over 3,500 complaints from viewers.
Samantha Womack who plays Ronnie Branning is rumoured to be leaving the soap after one dramatic plot line too far.
The actress, who plays a new mother in the popular BBC1 Soap, lost her new born baby to cot death and then swapped him for Kat Moon’s (Jessie Wallace) new-born baby.
Womack’s agent is downplaying reports that her departure is due to the recent storyline and emphasises that her contract comes to a natural end in the not-too-distant future.
However, the 38-year-old actress is said to have stopped filming as she was too upset at the distressing storyline and ‘made it clear’ to her superiors that she thought the disturbing plot was one step too far.
Although the plot appears to fit in with the harrowing events that continue to happen within the small Albert Square, Samantha allegedly handed her letter of resignation in November after she read the script for the New Years’s Eve episode.
Samantha called filming the scenes as the “most horrific four weeks” of her life and said she “couldn’t stop crying.
“What Ronnie has been through is such a crushingly awful thing to even pretend might happen to you. I actually felt ill having to portray it. We used an expensive silicone doll, and it was so lifelike it upset a lot of people on set. We had to stop and take a break because it was too much.”
The star is rumoured to be leaving the show in May.
