Knowing that Johnny Depp was close by filming the latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean films for Walt Disney, a young fan decided to write him a quick note. Beatrice Delap, a 9 year old girl at Meridian primary school in Greenwich, south-east London, requested that Johnny Depp’s character in the movies, the pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, assist the students in a mutiny against the teachers. In a move that astonished the school’s teachers and students, Depp paid a visit to the school to meet Ms. Delap.
With a very short notice of only a few minutes before arriving, Johnny Depp, Hollywood’s top earning actor, left filming at nearby Old Royal Naval College and showed up at the school in full costume and character of Captain Jack Sparrow. He brought along a few other cast members for the visit as well.
Captain Sparrow called Beatrice Delap to the front of the class, showed her letter to the students, and gave her a hug. Ms. Delap’s head teacher, Jo Graham, said of the visit that “It was a very memorable day.”
The letter young Beatrice wrote said: “We are a bunch of budding young pirates. Normally we’re a right handful but we’re having trouble mutinying against the teachers. We’d love it if you could come and help.” She signed the letter “Beatrice Delap, age 9, a budding pirate.”
Beatrice’s comments about the eventful day were: “I had the idea to write the letter last week after me and a friend went to see the film set. Yesterday the school called us in for a special assembly at the end of the day.
“Then Johnny Depp walked in dressed as Captain Jack. There were gasps and screams. He pulled the letter out of his pocket and said he was going to frame it. Then he called me down and gave me a hug.
“He said the pirates were going to take over the school and only eat candy and our teeth would turn black and fall out. But he said we shouldn’t mutiny against the teachers because there were some police outside and we might get into trouble. It was the most exciting school day ever.”
Johnny Depp is reportedly being paid $38 million for his role in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, expected to be called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The series of films have been very successful for the Walt Disney film company. The first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, earned over $653 million worldwide, the second movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, earned over $1 billion worldwide, and the last installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, earned just short of $1 billion.
The character of Captain Jack Sparrow is one of his fan’s favorites of Johnny Depp. He is a much loved and respected actor. This latest piece of news of the actor taking time out to delight a young girl and answer her plea to mutiny against the teachers will only endear him more to his large fan base.
