Pop legend George Michael has admitted that she deserved to final end up in jail, and that it was karma catching up with him.
Speaking to BBc Radio, the former Wham! Man talked about his jail spell for crashing his car whilst under the influence of drugs, and how he was ‘ashamed’ of his repeated law-breaking.
“I was assured I wasn’t going to prison but I thought I was, and it was much easier to take because I felt it was deserved,” he said.
“This was a hugely shameful thing to have done repeatedly so karmically I felt like I had a bill to pay. I went to prison, I paid my bill.
“Remarkably enough — I know people must think it was a really horrific experience — it’s so much easier to take any form of punishment if you believe you actually deserve it, and I did.”
Michael also received a huge fine and a 5 year driving ban, although believes he was made an example of because “I’m George Michael and the poster boy for cannabis”.
Michael also revealed that Paul McCartney, Elton John and Boy George wrote to him while he was in prison.
Talking about his first night in jail, George said, “It wasn’t a weekend break, put it that way.
“I didn’t feel sorry for myself. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this place is absolutely filthy’.
“I just thought, ‘you get your head down’.”
George also revealed that he signed his autograph for every single staff member and prisoner in the prison, and some of them had his signature on headed prison paper.
George has sold over 100 million records in his career, but has been in trouble with the law before.
In 2007 George received a driving ban for being found collapsed in his car from drink and drugs, and in 1998 was fined for making lewd advances to an undercover male police officer in a set of public toilets in Beverly Hills.
