Eurovision victory eludes UK and Ireland yet again

UK contestant hopefuls Blue and their Irish competitors Jedward both walked away from the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest without grasping the top spot.

Although Jedward had been tipped higher than Blue as possible winners, both bands couldn’t win the title, dashing the hopes of thousands of UK and Irish fans who have been waiting years for a Eurovision win. For the UK, 1997 was the last time they were able to celebrate.

In the Eurovision final, Blue scored a total of 100 points, which was far better than UK’s last year’s entrant Josh Dubovie who came last. The band had strategically used the Eurovision Song Contest as a platform to annouce the reformation of their band after over a decade apart and were hoping for a better start.

The Irish twins Jedward managed to bag 8th place with their song Lipstick, but a duet from Azerbaijan stole the show.

The romantic duet ‘Running Scared’, was performed by Ell and Nikki. And although Nikki was born in Azerbaijan, we could claim her win as partly our own as she does live in north London with her husband and two daughters.

So maybe we aren’t the losers after all?

Do you think Blue had what I took to win the final?
